Tusla - An Ghníomhaireacht um Leanaí agus an Teaghlach - Child and Family Agency

Tusla is seeking compassionate and dedicated carers to provide a short term, safe and supportive environment for Separated Children Seeking International Protection (SCSIP). These young people have arrived in Ireland without their parents or guardians and need stability, care, and guidance as they settle into their new lives. The primary purpose is to provide a safe haven in a family/home environment until they can be reunited with their family of origin.

Types of Foster Care for Separated Children Seeking International Protection

  • Foster Care – All durations (long term, short term) - Provide a caring home for SCSIP aged under 18, or those with additional vulnerabilities.
  • Supported Lodgings Carers – Support young people aged 16 or over who need a home environment but not necessarily full parental care.
  • Emergency Foster Carers – Offer short-term placements (7–10 days) to children in need of immediate care while assessments are completed.

  Who Are Separated Children?

Separated children are under 18 years old, have travelled to Ireland alone, and need care and protection. They come from a variety of backgrounds and have often faced hardship, including:

  • Conflict, discrimination, or persecution in their home country.
  • Abuse, neglect, or abandonment.
  • Trafficking or exploitation.
  • Uncertainty about why they were sent away.
  • The hope of reuniting with family members in Ireland.

The most common countries of origin include Somalia, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.

  Separated children require:

  • Emotional support to heal from past trauma.
  • Protection from racism and discrimination.
  • Help adjusting to life in a new community.
  • Guidance through the asylum process.
  • Assistance in reconnecting with family, where possible.

How Their Experience Differs from Children in Care

Unlike other children in care, separated children often:

  • Arrive with no family or support network in Ireland.
  • Have limited understanding of Irish culture and norms.
  • Have experienced different types of trauma.
  • Carry responsibilities or expectations from their family of origin.

  How we will support you

  • Dedicated social worker for the child
  • A link worker for you and your family.
  • Financial allowances to meet the needs of the child while in your care.
  • Therapeutic supports for the child
