Hybrid Open Access Journals

Hybrid Open Access journals are subscription-based journals which offer authors the possibility of publishing their accepted article via a number of Open Access routes. These are the GREEN and GOLD open access routes.

A large number of commercially published subscription based journals now describe themselves as ‘Hybrid’ Open Access journals.

The best place to see whether the journal you intend to publish in, or alternatively, what open access routes a given journal offers is the Directory of Open Access Journals

Principle 8 of Plan S states that

The Funders do not support the ‘hybrid’ model of publishing. However, as a transitional pathway towards full Open Access within a clearly defined timeframe, and only as part of transformative arrangements, Funders may contribute to financially supporting such arrangements;

It is likely though that the Hybrid Publishing model will exist for a number of years to come.
