Green, Gold, and Diamond Open Access

GREEN and GOLD Open Access are publishing models which have been introduced by virtually all commercial academic publishers internationally in order to respond to the growing movement towards Open Access publishing.

GREEN OPEN ACCESS…

is often referred to by publishers as “Self-Archiving”. What this means is that the Author, the Institution you belong to (i.e. are studying at or working at) and/or the publisher can place a version of the article you have written within a web based repository, after your paper has been accepted by the publisher and journal for publication.

When a research paper is submitted to a journal for publication, the paper will go through a number of different stages of development/review. These can include;

  • Peer Review (which often suggests revisions and additions) leading to a second edition of the paper
  • Once accepted, Copy Editing and Proof Reading/Editing occur to make sure that punctuation, spelling, publisher house style, any ambiguities/further questions are sorted out prior to publication, which then leads to another edition of the paper.
  • Finally, a further and final edition of the paper is produced using the fonts and layout employed by the specific journal title, which will be how the article will appear in print and on screen.

When it comes to making research papers openly accessible via the Green Open Access/ Self Archiving route, there is a need to check which precise edition of the paper the publisher in question will ALLOW you to make Open Access. To do this you will need to consult the web pages of the publisher whose journal you are seeking to have your paper published within.

The Open Access web pages of the Publishers from whom TUSLA have currently purchased access to full text electronic journal content are listed below.

If the publisher of the journal you are seeking to publish in is not one of these, then you can use the Sherpa Romeo website  to search for the journal title you are publishing in and this will inform you of which version of the paper you can self-archive under the Green Open Access route. The example below is a result for one of the titles Tusla currently subscribes to

GOLD OPEN ACCESS…

Is what is known as a “pay to publish” model.

Under Gold Open Access the final publisher and published version of your article is made freely accessible online, immediately and permanently with full re-use rights, both via the published journal website and also with the right to deposit within a Repository.

When publishing through commercial academic journals, the normal publication process involves an ‘embargo’ on the final published version appearing in the journal, being made available outside of the journal for an ‘embargo period’. This period can be between six to eighteen months depending on the policy of both the publisher and the individual journal title. What it means, is that if you want to read the research, you or the institution you work for need to possess a paid subscription to the journal title in question, to get past the paywall, which unlocks access to the published article.

Gold Open Access enables the embargo period to be avoided and the full text of the final published article to be immediately available.

As part of the Gold Open Access publication process, authors may be required to pay what is known as an ARTICLE PUBLICATION CHARGE (or APC). More information about APC’s can be accessed HERE.

DIAMOND OPEN ACCESS…

Diamond Open Access refers to a scholarly publication model in which journals and platforms do not charge fees to either authors or readers.
