Tusla - An Ghníomhaireacht um Leanaí agus an Teaghlach - Child and Family Agency

Coffee mornings, school visits, job fairs, webinars and even a storytelling competition are just some of the events taking place around the country to mark Social Work Awareness Week from November 21st — 27th.

The campaign, which was launched in Dublin on Tuesday, celebrates the instrumental work social workers do every day in organisations and communities across Ireland.

It is also a recruitment drive and awareness campaign for anyone interested in a career in social work. During this week, industry leaders and front-line staff members will share their experiences and highlight the importance of social workers and the positive difference they can make in a child’s life.

Currently, Tusla employs 1,609 social workers across Ireland, but the Agency is recruiting more social workers to match the growing demand across various teams, including adoption, fostering, child protection and family support. Each role is instrumental in the work we do every day and makes a difference in the lives of children and families that Tusla supports.

Clara is one of the younger cohort of social workers to have joined Tusla’s ranks in recent years.

“I joined the agency formally in 2019 and haven't looked back,” she says. “I always wanted a job that was different every day; in social work you get that. People may think that in social work you meet with people from one particular section of society, but that’s not the case. You meet people in all walks of life.”

Clara says that although the role is multifaceted, she can rely on her colleagues in those times when things are challenging.

“The supports you get from the team around you and from your manager, helps. We take it in turns to support each other depending on the week.”

Clara says that the hope of making a difference in people’s lives is at the heart of what she does.

“You want to feel that you are helping others. You may not get to see the changes that your work can bring but that doesn’t matter. What I like is to meet people at a very human level and to work from there.”

She adds: “The impact of social work extends beyond the individual families we work with — creating a more informed and supportive community that actively engages in safeguarding the welfare of all children.”
