Sexual Assault Treatment Units (SATU)

What is a Sexual Assault Treatment Unit (SATUs)?

SATUs are specialist medical examination and a range of medical care for those aged fourteen years and over who have recently been sexually assaulted or raped.   Victims aged 14 to 18 years must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who can give permission for the specialist medical examination.  While SATU services respond to requests from the Gardaí for the collection of forensic evidence to aid the prosecution of the sexual crime, SATU services are also available to people who do not wish to report the incident to the Gardaí.

What does a Sexual Assault Treatment Unit (SATU) do?

The specialist team of SATU staff provide easily accessible, sensitive and supportive services which address the medical and emotional needs of the victims of sexual crime and offer appropriate follow up care. In addition to undertaking the forensic medical examination which may be required in the event of criminal prosecution, SATUs provide the range of medical treatments that may be required by a victim in the aftermath of a sexual assault. This includes emergency contraception and medication to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infection.  SATUs provide their services in a highly sensitive manner and SATU volunteers, provided by the local Rape Crisis Centre, are available to support the victim through the forensic process. These volunteers are also a great source of on-going practical and emotional support.  While independent of An Garda Siochanna, they can link the victim to support through the criminal justice process, should that be the victims choice, and to other support or counselling services that a victim of sexual assault may need.

All volunteers receive specific training and regular supervision to ensure their ability to best meet the needs of those who have suffered a sexual assault.
